History
In 1932, the company founder, Tuomas Vohlonen, a surveyor with profession, filed a patent application for a unique method of filling and sealing a lightweight compass housing made entirely of celluloid and filled with liquid to dampen the needle and to protect it from shock and wear. due to excessive movement. In 1935, Vohlonen was granted a patent on his design, and it went into mass production a year later as a Witch-mounted Suunto M-311 . Although it is not the first portable liquid-filled compass, the Vohlonen design is compact and lighweight, allowing it to be easily worn on the wrist. With minor changes, M-311 was later adopted by the Finnish Army as M-34 .
The company was on the trade list on February 4, 1936.
During World War II, Suunto introduced a compass abridged liquid appearance, /40 , for artillery officers and other users requiring precision instruments to measure azimuth. The company grew rapidly after the war, providing compasses and other navigation instruments to the civil and military markets.
After Tuomas Vohlonen died in 1939, his widow Elli Vohlonen ran the company until 1952, when he sold it to Paavo Kajanne, Aarne Mahnala and Veli-Jussi Ḫ'̦ls̮'̦, who also owned Redox Oy. In the late 1970s, they sold the company to the Niemist̮'̦ family, and in the early 1990s Sponsor Oy bought the company and listed it on the stock exchange in 1995. In 1999, Amer Sports bought the company.
In 1996 Suunto Oy acquired Recta SA, a Swiss compass.
In the late 1930s Suunto Oy was located in the backyard of Laivanvarustajankatu 8, Ullanlinna, Helsinki. In 1959 Suunto moved to ItÃÆ'ämerenkatu 52, Ruoholahti, Helsinki. In 1969 the company moved to Juvan teollisuuskatu 8, Juvanmalmi, Espoo. Suunto Oy headquarters moved to its current location in Valimotie 7, Tammisto, Vantaa in 2001.

Compass product
Suunto creates a wide range of magnetic compasses, including the A and M series for general navigation, the Arrow compass for competitive orienteering and KB (KÃÆ'äsiBussoli, engl. handbag compass), MB (= MatchBox) and MC (= Mirror Compass) for those who need professional quality compass hand cushion . Suunto also produces the compass line Recta, including the baseplate series based on the Suunto design, the DS series of mirror sighting compasses, Recta Clipper micro compass, and the famous series of matches DP found by Recta in 1941. In 2009, Suunto stopped the Swiss-made Recta DO > series, moving all remaining Recta compass from Biel, Switzerland to its production facility in Vantaa, Finland.
After acquiring Recta AG in 1996, Suunto incorporated the global needle system technology Recta Turbo 20 that Recta SA patented initially into its many compass designs.
Since 1967, successors of the M-40 have been offered as a line of KB , comprising an accurate high-quality survey and inclinometer compound against the degree fraction. Traditionally made of solid aluminum block machines, each KB compass contains a magnetic dial with calibration marks printed along its outer edge. The magnifying lens (KB-14) or prismatic view (KB-77) is mounted on one end of the instrument with a crosshair that provides a disk view, which contains both forward and reciprocal pads. In operation, the user divides the field of vision with an instrument, using a lens or device prism to precisely measure the direction of the object being viewed. Suunto has since ceased production of KB-77 . The newer model, KB-20 , uses a housing consisting of high-impact plastic that allows the compass to float if it falls into the water.
Sistem Global Needle
The Suunto Global Needle System is obtained from Recta as a design needle Turbo-20 , conventional magnetic compass needle is not used. In contrast, compass and magnet needles are built as separate units that function independently of each other. The needle itself stays on its axle by means of a double bearing, while the magnet rotates on the shaft with its own ornate cushion. When attracted by the earth's magnetic field, a separate compass magnet absorbs the vertical force of the magnetic field, so that the angle of the magnetic field (magnetic dip) can not tilt the needle, and the needle can no longer move in the vertical plane. It provides accurate northern magnetic readings in all the world's magnetic zones. The design also allows accurate reading with a tilted compass at an angle of up to 20 degrees, while the use of strong magnets causes the needle to resolve very quickly, facilitating rapid and accurate bearing/course measurements. This allows users to get a compass that is quite accurate even when moving, such as when climbing or traveling by canoe.
Military model
The first military compass produced by Suunto and adopted by the Finnish Army was M-34 , a wrist compass with aluminum housing, also manufactured by Physica of Helsinki. The two companies engaged in a long court battle over ownership of the M-34 design, which lasted until the early 1950s. In 1989, the Finnish Army adopted the wrist Suunto M89-60 wrist with a composite baseplate, followed by M-801 with aluminum housing. Suunto baseplate compass used by mountain climbers, expeditions, and rescue organizations around the world including MC-2 , KB-14 , A-30 , and M5 NATO (RA-69) along with the M-9 and Clipper wrist compass. The MC-2 optical-sight (mirror) compass, RA-69 and several other Suunto compasses have been issued to various NATO military forces over the years, including the British Army, Canadian Land Army and some US Special Forces Unit. The Recta DP-6 matchbox-style compass is still used by the Swiss Army.
Sports watch
Suunto creates multi-function electronic watches like Core , Ambit , Vector , X-Lander , and X10 , which can provide various functions including compass pads, altitude, exercise effects and even GPS locations, depending on the model. Suunt electronic multi-functional sports watches are made for different sports such as sailing, golfing, mountain climbing, mountain climbing, skiing and alpine training.
G-, S-, T- and X-series of sports watches present an era when products with number 3 are described as entry level, number 6 as follow and 9 as professional or high-end.
Suunto Vector is the world's first outdoor watch with ABC -function. Released in 1998, it barely changed until it was discontinued in 2015. There is also a HR version of Vector , adding basic heartbeat functions.
Suunto T6 with the newer version of T6C (= Leisure belt) and T6D (= Double belt) is one of the most sophisticated among monitors heart rate at the time of its release in 2004. It has, among other features, rate-rate heart rate, air-pressure altimeter, EPOC calculation and training effects and support for external POD devices to measure speed and distance.
Suunto T3 (and versions C and D) offers many advanced training properties at a price much lower than T6 . The T4 (with also versions C and D) is almost the same as T3 , but adds an electronic trainer function. There is also T1 and T1C , a very basic heart monitor in the T-series. All T-series versions have been out of production until 2012.
The M-Series is the successor of the T-series (except for T6 ). The M-Series is more of an entry-level fitness lineup, while the T-series is more devoted to sports training. The M-series includes the basic heart monitor M1 and M2 (same clock, different heartbeat strap) and M4 and M5 with more advanced functions, most of which train electronically for specific purposes, such as weight control or improved physical performance. M4 out of production in 2013.
Suunto Quest is a heart rate monitor devoted to sports training.
Suunto Ambit series, with the first version released in 2012 and later has included a list of Ambit2 and Ambit3 , currently the most sophisticated of watches Suunto sport. These include GPS, ABC functions, rechargeable batteries, advanced training functions (in the training function Ambit are the successors of T6 ) and the software can be updated. Users can modify many of the Ambit functions according to individual preferences. Different applications are also available, and users can also create their own apps. Limited in production quantities, Ambit2 S Black Limited Edition has been available from June 2015. Ambit3 adds smartphone connectivity as its main enhancement. On September 29, 2015 Ambit3 Peak Nepal edition was released. There is no other distinction between this and the normal version besides the "Nepal Edition" text on the screen and the slightly different bezel, but every hour sold 25 euros donated to the Red Cross for humanitarian assistance and rebuilding in Nepal. On January 7, 2016 Ambit3 Vertical was introduced. This adds more comprehensive vertical motion tracking and introduces a redesigned body.
Suunto Core is an ABC watch (A = altitude, B = barometer, C = compass). Since its release in 2007, there have been over 30 different versions of Core . Everything has the same function, but their outer appearance is different. Most versions have a plastic frame, but some are made of aluminum and two are made of stainless steel. Most of the Core versions are no longer produced. There are limited editions, Core numbers, such as Everest Edition (8848 made, to honor climbing Apa Sherpa 21 on Mount Everest), Red Bull X-Alps Edition (864 created, according to race length), and Extreme Edition (3000 created). Suunto celebrated its 75th anniversary with the release of Anniversary Edition (in some countries known as Alpine edition ). Core All Black is often mistakenly called Core All Black Military or Core Military, but such nominations are not official and such "military" versions do not exist. Core is said to be named after incorporating the core elements required in this type of watch.
Suunto Lumi is designed for women. This includes almost the same function as Core . With a special adapter, Lumi can be used as a pendant. The Finnish word "lumi" is translated as "snow". Published in 2007, Lumi is only available for several years.
Suunto Traverse was released on October 1, 2015. The watch includes ABC, GPS-receiver, and heart rate monitoring functions. This includes many functions of Ambit3 but should somehow be a follow-up of Vector and Core as open watch.
Suunto previously used Suunto ANT and ANT (based on ANT network standards) in wireless data transmission. New releases starting from the Ambit3 series are based on low-energy Bluetooth. The most basic heartbeat monitors have used analog signals.
Although most sports watches are made in Finland, some products are manufactured in China by other manufacturers. These include T-series excluding T6 , M-series , Quest , Lumi , core and most POD. Suunto has succeeded in reducing production in China and increasing the proportion of Finnish manufacturing.
Lifestyle watches
While publishing Kailash , Suunto also introduced their new approach, separating branches: along with Essential and Elementum , Kailash is is now forming a new branch called Suunto 7R , which is a collection of lifestyle watches, while watches for sports and performs presents separate categories.
Suunto Kailash is published on October 14, 2015. This includes GPS-receiver but premium appears is its main feature. This product is mainly designed for travelers. Kailash is also the first product to come Suunto world series .
On January 15, 2015 Suunto released an Important Important collection of premium watches. It functionally resembles Core but is made in Finland from premium materials. Finnish design and manufacturing is emphasized, creating a stark contrast to China-made Core .
Suunto also produces the series of Elementum from premium handmade watches with special functions for outdoor ( Terra ), water activities ( Aqua ) and sailing (< i> Ventus , discontinued).
Software
Suunto provides software to interpret data recorded from watches and to control it.
For T6 there is Training Manager and for T3 and T4 there is Lite Training Manager .
In early 2010 Suunto released the online service Movescount . In 2014 Suunto introduces apps to use the Movescount functionality on iOS mobile devices. After multiple delays, the Movescount app for Android was released on May 4, 2015.
On May 4, 2015 Amer Sports announced it has acquired the Sports Tracker, which joins with Movescount . Later this alliance became Amer Amer's digital service base.

In December 2015, Suunto introduced the Customizer , a web page to create and order customized watches according to individual preferences. This initially is available for doing with Ambit3 Peak and Sport .
Dive computer and instrument
In 1965, a British sports diver noticed that Suunto's liquid compass also worked underwater. Following this revelation, it did not take long before the first dive compass of Suunto, SK-4 (= SukellusKompassi, engl. Diving compass) was launched and became famous for its durability and reliability. Among the users are explorers, ecologists and famous marine inhabitants such as Jacques Cousteau. During the 1980s, Suunto became a leader in the manufacture of dive instruments. Having previously produced mechanical tools, Suunto is now starting the production of electronic scuba diving and launching SMEs in 1987. This is Suunto's most significant innovation of this decade and a major influence on the transition of scuba diving to popular sport..
