Flea treatment is a procedure used to treat flea infestation in human or animal populations. They can treat the itching caused by a bite and can excrete or kill the flea itself.

The itching associated with tick bites can be treated with anti-itching cream, usually antihistamines or hydrocortisone. Calamine lotion has been proven effective for itching.

Modern bug controls are approached using an integrated pest management protocol (IPM) at host level (pets). IPM is achieved by targeting lice during at least two separate life stages, with at least two separate molecules. This is usually achieved by using adulticide to kill adult infestation and insect development inhibitors (IDI), such as the lymphaturon, or insect growth regulator (IGR), such as methoprene, to prevent the development of immature stages.

Adult flea, larvae, or eggs can be controlled with insecticides. Lufenuron is an animal preparation (known as the Program) that attacks the ability of larval lice to produce chitin, which is necessary for hard adult exoskeleton, but does not kill lice. Flea drugs should be used with caution as many of them also affect mammals.

Flea treatment meant for dogs can be harmful to cats. Lice and lice ointments are also harmful to humans; commercial prep labels warn: "First aid: If on skin or clothing, remove contaminated clothing, rinse skin immediately with plenty of water for 15-20 minutes, contact a poison control center or doctor for treatment advice... Although (the product) only applied between the shoulder blade and the base of the tail, the dog's skin and hair oil carry the product to the whole body... Wash it with soap and water after handling... "

Since more than three quarters of the life of a louse is spent elsewhere other than the host animal, it is not enough to just treat the host; it is also important to treat the host environment. Full vacuuming, washing linen in hot water, and treating all residents in the immediate environment (all households, for example) is very important and if possible should be done regularly.

Contemporary commercial products for the topical treatment of flea infestations in pets contain pesticides such as imidacloprid, permethrin, and (S) -methoprene. All flea control products are advised to be used for at least half a year because the flea and tick life cycle can last up to 6 months, and by using one of the tick and tick control products for so long, the flea is strongly prevented and, in the end, stops. Although all of these products are effective in fighting lice and tick infestations, they have different active ingredients and, since cats can not metabolize some product compounds, care should be taken in their use.

Home infestation is treated in various ways. Spot-on insecticides kill fleas in pets and in turn the animals themselves collect and catch newly hatched lice. Fogger or spray insecticides containing insect growth regulators, such as pyriproxyfen or methoprene can kill eggs and pupae, which are quite resistant to insecticides.

Extremely vacuum cleaners are also helpful. A vacuum should be used around all the animals that are frequent, to pick up all the larvae and eggs. Traditional advice recommends removing bags after each vacuum cleaner. One very limited trial (only one vacuum sweeper used on a carpeted surface type) found that vacuuming killed 96% of adult fleas and 100% younger ticks. The introduction of this preliminary study to other circumstances is unclear.

Diatomaceous soils may also be used as a treatment of lice at home in lieu of acetylcholinesterase inhibition or insecticide inhibition which carries the risk of poisoning to humans and other animals. However, diatom earth dust is harmful to pets and people when inhaled, requiring the use of dust masks to be applied.

Bathing dramatically reduces the flea population in infected animals, especially when combined with mild detergent or shampoo, and brushing or combing.

Dry pennyroyal leaves have been suggested as traditional and natural lice control, but essential oils are toxic to mammals and should not be digested.

Borax can be used to treat lice infestations. Kill the fleas by drying them, but the safety for the pets has not been tested.

Lice can not withstand high temperatures, so turnover through the dryers in the medium or high ticks kills on clothing.

Flea can drown with immersion for 24 hours; they may appear to be dead if immersed for a shorter time, but can live again after a few hours. Soaps and surfactants can facilitate lice death in soaking. The process of washing the lice (and pets) removes the very large waxes on the body of the lice and dies from dehydration.
