Gobstoppers or jawbreakers is a kind of hard candy. They are usually round, and usually range from about 1 - 3 cm; although gobstoppers can be up to 8 cm in diameter.

The term gobstopper comes from 'gob', which slang in the UK and Ireland for the mouth. The sweet is a favorite among English schoolchildren between World War I and World War II. In his children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, British author Roald Dahl describes "Everlasting Gobstoppers", a fictitious gobstopper that can never be smaller or finished.

Gobstoppers usually consist of a number of layers, each layer dissolves to reveal different color layers (and sometimes different flavors), before dissolving completely. Gobstoppers are too difficult to bite without the risk of tooth decay (hence the name jawbreaker ).

Gobstoppers have been sold in traditional sweet shops for at least a century, often sold with the weight of jars. When gobstoppers dissolve very slowly, they last very long in the mouth, which is a major factor in their enduring popularity with children. Bigger ones can take days or even weeks to fully dissolve.

Producing

Gobstoppers are made by slowly depositing a layer to the core (such as a sugar ball or pressed gum). Gobstoppers are made in a large pan, spinning, and heated. This is called "heat panning". Candy takes several weeks to manufacture, because the process of adding liquid sugar is repeated several times. Natural and artificial colors and flavors are also added during the panning process.
