Character history
Season One
Pete works at the Oceanside Wellness Center as a naturopathic doctor and licensed herbalist. He graduated from medical school and practiced western traditional medicine for several years before spending five years in China studying alternative medicine. Pete's medical practice combines eastern and western medicine in an integrative approach, and he is often asked to provide pregnant women with a holistic birth plan. Pete also gave lectures locally and internationally on Eastern and Eastern Medicine issues.
During his first visit. Addison Forbes Montgomery to Oceanside Wellness, Pete and Addison built a seductive and often flirty relationship. Addison originally labeled Pete a "shaman", but he allowed the "cute hippy boy" to take care of him with acupuncture. Although Pete was immediately attracted to him, he promised their friend, Dr. Sam Bennett, that he would stay away from Addison. However, after discovering Addison weeping over the newly discovered infertility, Pete kisses her to prove that he is not "dry." Addison seems open to pursuing a relationship with Pete, but is warned by Sam. According to Sam, Pete is a serial monogamist, unable to connect emotionally with any woman since his wife's death. Pete's last outburst into the office romance apparently brought disaster, and resulted in an unexpected departure from the OB/GYN from practice. In response, Oceanside Wellness implements a strict "no empress" rule.
Pete's relationship with his wife is rather mysterious and he seems reluctant to discuss their marriage. During a visit to his grave on the anniversary of his death, we found Anna Wilder died in 2001, at the age of 40. (In this "Other Side of Life," Sam declared that Pete's wife had died eight years earlier.) In the next interview Tim Daly said there was confusion about whether Anna had died six or eight years before, which was finally decided to be six years earlier. ) In a discussion about the patient, Pete instructs another doctor that he lives in an unhappy marriage because his wife is sick, and that they can not marry. Pete finally tells Addison that he went to bed with his wife on Tuesday night and when he woke up on Wednesday the next morning, he was dead. She further states that there is no perfect night during their marriage, even their wedding night. This information is the most Pete disclosed to his colleagues about his wife. During his second visit to his wife's grave, Pete releases his buried anger into his wife's gravestone. After stating that Anna is "cruelly ruthless," and that she hates him, Pete softens and apologizes for not being able to save her. Pete then reveals to Violet that at the time of Anna's death, they are trying to conceive a child.
Season Two
In the fourth episode, a mysterious woman from Pete's past appeared in the clinic and revealed a surprising fact about her past. Meg Porter (played by Jayne Brook) is a Doctor Without Borders and ex-boyfriend Pete. They meet when they are both citizens and then work with Doctors Without Borders. Meg reveals to Pete's coworkers who are shocked that once, during the war in Bosnia, Pete (who Meg calls Peter) refused to be evacuated and, despite the mortar fire, staying with sick children throughout the night saved the lives of most of them. Later, Pete told Meg, who had a smoking habit, that his wife was a smoker and he did not quit the habit before he died. Although their relationship is renewed, Meg decides to return to Ghana, where she works on an anti-malaria program, but Pete asks him to return to her because she makes her happy. Meg returns then to L.A. and even tried to quit smoking for Pete, but even then, the relationship did not work. Meg is not sure if she wants to stay at L.A., and Pete admits that since her unhappy marriage she no longer trusts women. When Pete and his partner at the Oceanside Violet Health Center linked it, the relationship with Meg was bound to end.
The relationship with Violet begins only with sex, but Pete then realizes that he wants more. When he asks Violet if they can move to the next level and start a real relationship, he refuses it, saying that he does not believe it because of his past. But it was Violet's behavior that actually ended everything when she started secretly dating Sheldon, the therapist from her rival's exercise, The Pacific Wellcare. Pete ended their relationship due to Violet's unfaithfulness. Afterwards, Violet reveals to Pete and Sheldon that she is pregnant, and is willing to raise the child, but rather ignores who her father is. At the end of season Two, Pete confronts Violet and says that she loves him and they can become a real family. Violet refused, but then she kissed him and confessed her feelings to him. In the end, Violet's patient, Katie, thinks Violet's baby is hers. Katie kidnapped Violet's baby, ending the finale as a cliffhanger.
Season Three
Season Three begins just twenty minutes after the end of Season Two, when Pete finds Violet lying unconscious on the floor of her house, bleeding to death. Katie cut the baby out of Violet and ran with him. Pete rescues Violet and, along with Naomi, rushes to the hospital, where Addison and Naomi perform surgery on her. Meanwhile, Katie appears in hospital with baby Violet, and is captured by Pete, Cooper, and the security team.
While waiting at the hospital during Violet's surgery, Pete thought back to their first meeting. They met only four days after the death of Pete's wife when Sam and Naomi, Pete's friends who had just opened their private practice, suggested that Pete meet Violet for therapy. Pete was initially reluctant to speak with Violet, but eventually he opened it and admitted that he hated his wife and argued with him all the time, even on the night he died. The next morning, she keeps yelling at her when she wakes up and just minutes later she realizes that she did not answer because she's dead. Pete admits that he is relieved after his wife's death and feels free. After that. Pete, who has Infectious Disease practice in Beverly Hills, decided to change her job, and began working at the Oceanside Wellness Center as an Alternative Medicine specialist, where she was still working eight years later.
A month after the premiere of Season Three, Violet is still trying to recover and forget the trauma. Pete lived with her and took care of her and her baby, Lucas. Violet does not leave her home and has a panic attack every time the doorbell rings. After getting advice from Sheldon, Pete decides to move, to help Violet recover and push him out. Violet realizes that after a traumatic event in her life, she can not be attached to her baby. He gave Lucas to Pete for treatment.
A few weeks later, Sheldon requested a paternity test and it was revealed that Pete was a biological father. Pete continues to be a single father and keeps Lucas, hoping one day Violet will return to him and be able to bond with their child. To give Violet more room and time to recover, Pete decides to leave his job at Oceanside Wellness and accept Naomi's offer to work as a doctor at Pacific Wellcare.
When Pete learns that Violet is sleeping with Addison's dad, she is so hurt that she declares it as the definite end of their relationship. Then Pete forgave Violet, but he is still not ready to move and reunite with Pete and their six-month-old son Lucas. After that Pete and Addison start a "mutual friends" relationship together.
Pete and Addison finally took their relationship further, becoming a true partner. They pursue this even after Violet returns and is ready for a real relationship with Pete and Lucas. At the end of season Three Addison tells Pete that he must be with Violet, and he seems to start a new relationship with Violet again.
Season Four
At the Four Seasons premiere, Pete posed the question to Violet after a passionate morning. The wedding was set for the following weekend. Violet escapes from the ceremony in the middle of the alley, but without words is assured by Pete to return and the two are married. In the Final of the Four Seasons, Violet learns that his license is suspended and Pete tells him that maybe they should split up. The last scene of Season Four shows Pete, alone with Lucas, having a heart attack without anyone around to help him.
Season Five
No one around to help Pete. Cooper arrives and finds him unconscious. She rushes to the hospital where Sam and Amelia are working to save her life. Violet was shocked again by what had happened. Pete has a quadruple emergency shortcut. Amelia operates under her influence. The operation was successful. After that, everything seemed fine between Violet and Pete until Pete started attacking Violet and he became his verbal punched bag and he gave no support as he struggled to get back to training. Sheldon became Pete's unofficial therapist. Pete starts to treat Violet as if he hates her. Sheldon warns him that he will lose him and Lucas if he continues this behavior. Violet and Pete try to get her to work but Violet does not want her to hate her because she hates his dead wife. Both agree to be separated peacefully.
Season Six
In the premiere of the season Violet wonders where Pete's court date has arrived and he's not there. Throughout the Violet episode and the rest of the exercise debate whether he has fallen into trouble or he decides to escape. The only clue available is a text message from Pete to Violet stating, "Go to run, whatever happens... know that I LOVE YOU!" Speculation drifted when Violet considered whether Pete meant jogging or flying abroad. The last minute of the episode was revealed by Violet in a conversation with Cooper that the police had told him that Pete had fallen off a hill while running and suffered a fatal heart attack. Because he came out of direct help, he could not come on time and he died. Violet was shocked, stating she could hardly believe it was Pete and she did not know how to deliver the news to their three-year-old son. As per his will, Pete's body was cremated and he insisted on the party instead of the funeral. At the event, Violet heard many people talking about how Pete saved their lives or helped family members, Violet had difficulty dealing with it, including going into the bathroom. He tries to celebrate by singing but breaks to shout over Pete leaving him and their own son.
