iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are smartphones designed, developed and marketed by Apple Inc. They were announced on September 7, 2016, at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco by Apple CEO Tim Cook, and released on September 16, 2016, replacing the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus as the main device in the iPhone series. Apple also released iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in various countries around the world throughout September and October 2016. They succeeded as a flagship device by iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus on September 22, 2017, and iPhone X on November 3, 2017.

The overall design of the iPhone 7 is similar to the iPhone 6S, but introduces new color options (black and black), waterproof and dust, new capacitive, static home buttons, and removes 3.5 mm headphone jack. The device's internal hardware also receives upgrades, including heterogeneous quad-core system-on-chip chips with improved system and graphics performance, and upgrades 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with optical image stabilization on all models and additional telephoto lenses on the iPhone 7 Model Plus to provide increased zoom capability.

IPhone 7 Reception is mixed. Although reviewers noted the improvements in the camera, especially the dual rear camera on the Plus model, they also stated that the iPhone 7 did not make any significant changes to the look or quality of manufacture, where the flagship smartphone competes beyond the quality of the iPhone 7. Many reviews highlight the controversial removal of the headphone 3 jack , 5 mm; some critics have argued that the change was intended to increase the license of the exclusive Lightning connector and the sale of Apple's own wireless headphone products, and question the impact of changes in audio quality. Apple is also ridiculed by critics for Phil Schiller's remark that such drastic changes require "courage".

The iPhone 7 has been the subject of some of the reported issues, especially the sound of hiss during heavy use of the phone and significant differences in performance between device variants. Apple has not released sales figures for the iPhone 7, but some US carriers are reporting that it is in high demand at launch. A further report by the end of 2016 suggested that Apple had reduced model production due to "sluggish" sales and declining demand, even though sales research after the first quarter of 2017 put the device as the world's best-selling smartphone.

History

Before the official announcement, various aspects of the iPhone 7 much rumored. Apple's plan to remove the 3.5 mm headphone jack received significant media attention. Other rumors include a flush camera, stereo speakers, 256 GB storage options, and a larger 3,100 mAh battery.

On August 29, 2016, an invitation to a press event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California on September 7, 2016 was sent to members of the media, encouraging direct speculation of upcoming iPhone 7 announcements. The iPhone 7 was officially announced on the show, with a pre -order from 9 September, and general availability on September 16th.

iPhone 7 launched in 30 new countries in September, with further international launch throughout October and November 2016. Indonesia is the last country to release iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, with availability starting March 31, 2017, after research and development of Apple's investment in the country.

On March 21, 2017, Apple announced the iPhone 7 with a red (and white front) settlement, as part of its partnership with Red Products to highlight the AIDS fundraising campaign. It was launched on March 24, 2017, but was later discontinued after the announcement of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

In September 2017, Apple announced iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus as the immediate successor to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, in addition to iPhone X.

On February 4, 2018, the NYPD has launched about 600 phones per day to its officers, who can choose between iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, switching from a failed Windows Phone.

Specifications

Hardware

Exterior iPhone 7 has a shape and volume similar to iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S. Along with the existing silver, gold, and rose gold colors, the device is offered in new matte black, glossy "glossy black" colors, and, for a limited time, red. The color of "dark black" is a dark, light black color. It is made through a multi-step process, starting with the anodizing phase to create a porous aluminum oxide casing surface, and then using a machine to sweep the casing through a powder compound, absorbed by aluminum oxide. This process ends with "ultrafine particle bath" for additional finishing; the whole process takes less than an hour.

iPhone 7 rated IP67 waterproof and dust, although the test has resulted in malfunctions, especially distorted speakers, after exposure to water. The warranty does not cover water damage to the phone.

The iPhone 7 home button uses capacitive mechanisms for input rather than physical buttons, as in the previous model, which means direct skin contact (or capacitive gloves) is required to operate the device. Physical feedback is given through the Taptic Engine vibrator, and the button is also sensitive to pressure. iPhone 7 maintains a "Touch 3D" display system introduced on the iPhone 6S, providing touch-sensitive touch-screen input.

The iPhone 7 does not have a 3.5 mm headphone jack; it was replaced by a second speaker grille that serves as a vent for the internal barometer. The Lightning-to-3.5-mm adapter adapter, as well as in-ear headphones that use the Lightning connector, are bundled with the device, and the adapter is also sold separately as an accessory. This adapter is also compatible with other iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices running iOS 10.

iPhone 7 uses the Apple A10 Fusion 64-bit system-on-chip, which consists of two low power cores and two high power cores (only two cores are used at any point of time). The A10 chip also features a hexa-core graphics chip capable of "gaming level consoles". As in previous models, iPhone 7 is available in two sizes: one with 4.7 inch screen, and a "Plus" variant with 5.5 inch screen. The screen has a size and resolution that is identical to the iPhone 6S, but with a wider color and increased brightness. The screen-to-body ratio is around ~ 66% and ~ 68% for 7 and 7 Plus, respectively.

Both device variants also contain a new iteration of Apple's motion coprocessor, M10. Unlike previous iPhone models, the internal storage options for the iPhone 7 start at 32 GB instead of 16 GB, and a maximum of 256 GB. iPhone 7 Plus offers 3 GB of RAM, more than any other iPhone before; iPhone 4.7-inch 7 has 2 GB.

IPhone 7 includes a 12 megapixel rear camera with quad-LED "True Tone" flash; the opening is widened to f/1.8, and the standard-sized phone model adds optical image stabilization - a feature previously exclusive to the Plus model. The iPhone 7 Plus includes a second 12 megapixel telephoto lens, which can be used to achieve 2ÃÆ'â € â„¢ optical zoom, and up to 10â € "digital zoom. The front camera is upgraded to a 7 megapixel sensor with automatic image stabilization.

Software

iPhone 7 shipped with iOS 10 pre-installed. The iPhone 7 Plus receives an exclusive portrait camera mode in iOS 10.1 software update. This camera mode is capable of producing a bokeh effect using depth of field analysis from the camera's second dual lens behind the iPhone 7 Plus.

Accessories

Each iPhone 7 comes with a Lightning-to-3.5-mm adapter. Apple sells the adapter independently as well. Apple also launched several Bluetooth wireless headphones intended for use with iPhone 7, including AirPods, wireless in-ear headphones, and three new Beats headphone products. The four products use an internal wireless chip known as the Apple W1, which is designed to provide low-power Bluetooth operation and integration with iOS and macOS products (though they are still compatible with other Bluetooth-enabled devices).

Reception

Reception to iPhone 7 is mixed. Gordon Kelly of Forbes noted that rival smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S7, have improved battery life and added water resistance above their predecessors while retaining the headphone jack, and that iPhone 7 camera photo quality improved but still lags behind on the back of some phones already on the market, including Galaxy S7 and Nexus 6P. Kelly praised how Apple was able to extract accurate color enhancement and color reproduction from its LCD display panel, while reminding that Apple is an old technology that is also behind competitors who have switched to a sharper 1080p or even 2K screen. The iPhone 7 exterior, which reuses the old designs of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S, was criticized, especially the size of the device and the top/bottom bezel, with Kelly writing that "iPhone 7 Plus is too big for a smartphone with a 5.5 inch screen".

Nilay Patel from The Verge described the device as "full of aggressive breaks from the conventions" despite their design continuity with the previous model (going as far as they call it "prototype redesign iPhone rumored next year disguised disguised as iPhone 6 "), citing the removal of the headphone jack (which he felt in an attempt to encourage the use of wireless headphones), heterogeneous CPUs, and redesigned the home button. The quality of the display is considered an improvement over previous models, though "not as crazy" as the quad HD display on competing phones. The Taptic Engine is considered to be "the truly valuable UI concept I've seen on my mobile in years" (compared to the 3D Touch's "gimmick"), Patel feels that the device's camera is a "step" above 6S in terms of performance , and praised the dual-lens camera on the 7 Plus to improve the camera phone functionality. However, he highlighted the lack of editing features that make use of them. Regarding the enhanced Bluetooth audio support provided by devices containing the W1 chip, he argues that Apple "takes an established open standard for new technologies, but instead makes the experience of using the new technology better across the board, making every audio product third-party wireless into second-class citizens of the Apple ecosystem. "By giving the iPhone 7 a 9 out of 10, he concluded that the device was" legitimately among the most compelling, powerful, powerful, ever sent Apple phones, and the most confident expression of the company's vision for a long time.IOS 10 is very good, the camera is better, and the performance is phenomenal and the battery lasts longer. "

John McCann from TechRadar writes that for the first time, the iPhone 7 Plus is phablet-sized "better" than the smaller model. He highlighted the increase in battery life and praised the camera, calling the Plus camera a "very good" plus for point-and-shoot, and "much better" for low light performance. McCann writes that the lack of headphone jacks "was initially frustrating," but noted that the flaw is a "positive step forward for the mobile industry", even though "short-term effects... make the most votes for now".

Headphone jack removal

Critics of the iPhone 7 centered around the removal of the headphone jack, including the inability to use wired headphones with the included adapter and charge the device simultaneously.

In a very spicy article, Nilay Patel from The Verge writes that removing the headphone jack - "ditching predefined standards" - will be "user-hostile and stupid". He goes on to list the reasons why removing the negative ports, ending with "No one asked for this" and "Choose with your dollars".

Gordon Kelly of Forbes notes that wireless audio technology is not yet mature today, with lower quality Bluetooth audio while Lightning audio reliability is still in question. The removal of the headphone jack means "You are pushed into an era where you have to pay more for decent headphones because of their need for DAC and/or integrated Lightning license", and pointed out that "the only company to Gain from this situation is Apple, which is now will charge licenses to millions of headphone companies ".

In particular, Apple's vice president, Phillip Schiller, who announced the change, was mocked online for stating that removing the headphone jack requires 'courage'. The online petition is made by SumOfUs consumer group, which accuses Apple of planned obsolescence and causes massive electronic waste by removing the headphone jack, reaching over 300,000 signatures.

Problem

Hissing sound

Some users have reported strange hissing sounds during heavy phone usage. CNET reported it as "a slow buzz and buzz coming from behind". The Daily Telegraph speculates that the new A10 Fusion iPhone 7 processor is the source of sound, which connects to tweets that compare the phone's sizzling sound to "hear the fans whirl around every time your Mac's CPU gets used to its true potential." The problem has been referred to as Hissgate .

Performance differences

The Guardian reported in October 2016 that the storage tests of Unbox Therapy and GSMArena showed that 32 GB of iPhone 7 "significantly" slower than 128 and 256 GB version, measuring write speed data 341 MB/s on 128 GB iPhone 7 models versus 42 MB/s on 32 GB model. October 2016 networking tests by Cellular Insights show that the A1660 and A1661 models with Qualcomm modems have "significant performance advantages" on the A1778 and A1784 models with Intel modems. The modem inspection also found that the ability of the Qualcomm version to use Ultra HD Voice has been turned off, tending to "equalize playing between Qualcomm, and Intel variants". The report concludes with the statement that "We are not sure what the main reason behind Apple's decision to source two different modem suppliers for the latest iPhone". Bloomberg reported in November 2016 tested by researchers from Twin Prime and Cellular Insights has shown two modems to do the same on multiple U.S. cellular networks. although one of the modems technically has faster connectivity. Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller told the publication that "Every iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus meet or exceed all Apple wireless performance standards, quality metrics, and reliability testing... In all our rigorous lab tests based on wireless industry standards, in thousands of hours real-world field testing, and in extensive testing of carrier partners, the data show no visible differences in the wireless performance of any of the models. " Bloomberg cited analysts and technology advisers as saying that "[Apple] does not want one version to earn a better reputation" and that "It may not have an impact on fanboy, but it may make other consumers think twice to buy Apple phones, especially if they think they might buy sub-standard products ".

Explosion and emission of smoke

In the same way that Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is now discontinued, there are reports about the iPhone 7 that explode or smoke out. In September 2016, one device reportedly exploded while on the move, while one other device experienced "damage that caused the battery to blow up internally". Another report about iPhone 7 that emits smoke and "melts" was published in October 2016.

Perception of slogans in Cantonese language

The iPhone 7's "This is 7" slogan has been misunderstood when translated into other specific languages. The slogan in China translates to "7, here here.", Meanwhile being "Exactly is 7." in Taiwan, and "This, exactly the iPhone 7." in Hong Kong. In Cantonese, the slogan becomes "This is penis", because "seven" is pronounced tsat , a slang for "penis".

Replacing the home button

In iPhone 7, Apple added a software key that prevents individuals from trying to change their own home button. Users are now required to go to the Apple Store to make improvements, with a "re-calibrate" the necessary buttons. This is a step further than Apple with iPhone 5S, 6 and 6S, where only the Touch ID functionality will be disabled but the "go-to-home" functionality still works.

Failure to connect to mobile service

Some iPhone 7 devices with A1660, A1780 and A1779 model numbers suffer from problems where they show the message "No service" even when mobile reception is available. Apple will fix the device for free within two years of its first retail sales of the unit.

Sales

Apple has deliberately withheld pre-order sales numbers, arguing that these "are no longer representative metrics for our investors and customers". Without releasing certain figures, T-Mobile USA stated that the iPhone 7 has broken the operator's all-time record for pre-order sales the first day. The following weekend, T-Mobile USA stated that the iPhone 7 was the launch of its biggest iPhone, becoming "up nearly 4x compared to the next most popular iPhone".

On September 14, 2016, two days before the iPhone 7 went on sale, Apple announced that due to high demand, they had sold out of all the "black jet" iPhone 7, and all the colors of the iPhone 7 Plus. This causes problems for customers in the iPhone Upgrade Program, which can not order new phones. After customer complaints and class action lawsuits, Apple makes changes to ensure program members can get a new phone as soon as possible.

In May 2017, analytical research firm Strategy Analytics announced that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were best-selling smartphones worldwide during the first quarter of 2017, each selling 21.5 million and 17.4 million units.

Offer US trade-in operator

For the initial US sales for iPhone 7, all four major wireless carriers announced buy-sell transactions. Under the deal, the monthly installment charge of iPhone 7 is negated with monthly credit on the consumer bill, but consumers who cancel their service with the carrier or pay off the phone before the completion of the installment contract will not receive credit for the remaining months. Jacob Kastrenakes of The Verge notes that the transaction is effectively a return of a two-year contract, where the transaction "basically locks you into that carrier for two years".

After this deal, Verizon announced they had seen an increase in sales over the iPhone 6S release the previous year, AT & T said that sales had exceeded expectations, and T-Mobile and Sprint announced "huge sales increases", with T-Mobile seeing demand around four times higher for 7 out of 6.

Report on trimmed production

In December 2016, DigiTimes reported that Apple has reduced the production of the iPhone 7 due to the declining demand for the product after the initial spike in interest waned. The reasons cited are consumers and suppliers turning their attention to iPhone models next year.

New reports from Nikkei at the end of December include details on the sales and production of the iPhone 7. The report, "based on data from suppliers", states that Apple will cut iPhone 7 production by 10% in the first quarter of 2017, "slow". Nikkei reported that Apple previously slashed production of the iPhone 7 by 20% due to accumulated inventory from previous models, but the new models "sold more slowly than expected". In addition, the report notes that "iPhone 7 Plus, which features two cameras on the back, remains popular", but "the camera's shortage of sensors has limited Apple's ability to meet the demand for mobile phones".
