Captain Murphy first appeared during the summer of 2012 on the Flying Lotus song produced "Between Friends" for the 2012 Adult Swim Singles Program. The song also features Earl Sweatshirt trading verses from Odd Future with Murphy. Speculation begins to emerge that Murphy is Tyler, the Creator, the Earl Sweatshirt, the Flying Lotus, or a combination of the three due to the frequent shift in the vocals. Between July and September 2012, Murphy released several music videos on YouTube featuring animations by lilfuchs. For several months, Captain Murphy began hinting at his debut project Duality, scheduled for release in November 2012.

Release
On November 15, 2012, Captain Murphy started a website and posted a 34-minute video titled "Duality" featuring his music as well as a recording of the archive and animation cult produced by Lilfuk. He then began to signal a deluxe version with separate tracks, bonus tracks and instrumental. On November 28th, Murphy released a deluxe version for download, along with the launch of the product line. The mixtape was released with separate artwork for each song, made by lilfuchs.
On the night of the launch of the deluxe version, Murphy played his first show at Low End Theory in Los Angeles, California. He does set in a robe to hide his identity, but towards the end of the show, he reveals himself as a Flying Lotus.
