Funding

The YouTube channel Crash Course was mocked in December 2011, and launched in January 2012 as one of the original channels, funded by YouTube. In April 2013, John Green explained that Crash Course is experiencing financial difficulties. Funds from Google are running out, and soon after the Green Video Chat with YouTube , VlogBrothers decides to launch a Subbable , crowdfunding website where viewers can donate, monthly, to channel in return for allowance. Donations are optional, as Hank Green says, "We consider the idealistic idea that the audience is not paying for things because they have to but because they care about the things they love and want to keep growing." Crash Course is the first series and channel offered on Subbable , and from now on and on, will be funded by the website. In March 2015, Subbable was acquired by Patreon, and Crowdfunding Crash Course was transferred to Patreon.

In 2014, Crash Course announced a partnership with PBS Digital Studios. The partnership will introduce Benzine and Plait, which will host the US. Government and Politics , and Astronomy , respectively. Humanities program

John Green, half of VlogBrothers, started the Crash Course series on January 26, 2012, with World History . As a collective, John has referred to the course he taught as "Humanity."

As a result of its partnership with PBS Digital Studios, as well as John's decision to take a break from Crash Course in 2015, the new host has been introduced to organize a humanities course: Craig Benzine ( Government ), Adriene Hill and Jacob Clifford ( Economy ), and Andre Meadows ( Games ).

Hank's sixth series, Philosophy , is also a humanity lesson, though it is produced by a team in Missoula that traditionally produces science series.

World History

Crash Course World History is the first series launched on the Crash Course channel, running from January 26th to November 5th, 2012.

On January 26, 2012, the series launched with "Agricultural Revolution", and new episodes aired on YouTube every Thursday. Throughout the episode, Green, the show host and executive producer, outlines the topics presented at the beginning of the video. Raoul Meyer, an AP World History teacher and former Green teacher at Indian Springs School, wrote the show, with revisions and additions by Green.

Crash Course World History features repeating segments like "The Open Letter," in which Green reads open letters to historical figures, periods, items, or concepts. Sometimes Green chatted with a naaf, a young version of himself that he called "I am from the past"; These characters usually have naive or clear questions or statements about the topic. The running joke is that the Mongols were a major exception to most generalizations in world history. The title of this fact signifies "Mongolage" (a portmanteau "Mongol" and "montage"), which shows a picture of a Mongol who shouts, "We are an Exception!" followed by a three-second clip of a scene from the 1963 Hercules Against the Mongols film that depicts a village attack.

In Crash Course World History Green often encourages viewers to avoid seeing history through Eurocentrism or the History of the "Great Man", but to be aware of the wider historical context. Crash Course World History , filmed in Indianapolis, has many followers, attracting millions of viewers. It has a special appeal for American students taking classes and AP World History exams; many students and teachers use the video to complete their course. Various episodes are featured in an online news publication.

After 42 episodes, World History ends on November 9, 2012. On June 27, 2014, in a video preview, John Green announced World History going back for second season, lasting 30 episodes. Finally, the second season ends on April 4, 2015. He makes some predictions about the future and is also quoted in his last sentence: "Also, thank you for watching this series, it's wonderful to be made, and we appreciate all you."

In 2018, an Arabic edition of World History, organized by Yasser Abumuailek, was launched. It's produced by Deutsche Welle and is hosted on their Arabic YouTube channel.

Literature

The second series of John is the Crash Course Literature , which was first aired as an eight-episode miniseries, starting November 15, 2012. The work discussed includes Romeo and Juliet The Catcher in the Rye , The Great Gatsby , and Emily Dickinson's poems.

In February 2014, it was announced that John Green will be following the series of US History with Crash Course Literature 2 . This second season starts on February 27, 2014, and lasts for 16 episodes, covering ancient works such as The Odyssey and Oedipus and novels such as To Kill a Mockingbird , Animal Slaughterhouse-Five , Frankenstein , and Beloved .

In January 2016, John announced that the third season of the Crash Course Literature will air in the summer. This season will include Huckleberry Finn Adventures , Visible Men , Hundred Years of Loneliness, Their Eyes Are Watching God , Sula , God of Flies as well as some Shakespeare sonnets.

On April 4, 2017, John Green revealed in the Vlogbrothers video that Literature will return for the fourth series in Autumn 2017; he mentioned Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell as a possible book to be discussed. On June 22 of that year, in VidCon, the complete list for the fourth season was announced: 1984 , The Handmaid's Tale , Parable of the Sower >, Candide , Macbeth , To Lighthouse , Yellow Wallpaper , and Pride and Prejudice .

US. History

On January 24, 2013, at the end of the first season of Crash Course Literature, John Green announced that it would be followed by Crash Course US History, starting the following week on January 31, 2013 with "The Black Legend, Native Americans, and Spaniards ". Following the tone set by World History , Green emphasizes maintaining an open and non-Western view of American History. The new segment called "Mystery Document" replaces "Open Letter"; Green took the manuscript from the secret compartment of the fireplace and read it aloud, then had to guess the author and the source of his work. If she is wrong, she is punished by a surprise pen. While the Mongols are largely absent, "Libertage", American-linked photographs over American flags with an electric guitar sound effect that opens and ends with an explosion, emerges whenever the great national pride of America is referred. The series ends on February 6, 2014. Just like World History , Crash Course U.S. History written by Raoul Meyer.

US. Government and Politics

As part of a partnership with PBS Digital Studios, Craig Benzine, known on YouTube as WheezyWaiter, was brought to host the US. Series Government and Politics . Benzine said that the course will give an idea of how the United States government should function, and how its function actually works. He also said that this course will teach about "branches of government, politics, elections, political parties, pizza parties, and more".

The series starts on January 23, 2015, and ends on March 4, 2016.

John Green posted to Twitter that "... we have things wrong wrong. We'll rework the series... And we'll bring a better series to you in a few months." On October 31, 2016, John Green explained that the video was removed due to "factual errors and too loud tones." Green said it was caused by the hasty production that comes from staffing and budgeting issues.
