server time is a server computer that reads the actual time of the reference clock and distributes this information to its clients using a computer network. The time server may be a local network time server or internet time server.
The most important and widely used protocol to distribute and synchronize time over the Internet is Network Time Protocol (NTP), although the less popular or outdated time protocols continue to be used. A variety of common protocols are used to transmit timing signals via radio links and serial connections.
The time reference used by the time server can be another time server on the network or internet, clock radio connected or atomic clock. The most common source time is GPS or GPS master clock. The time server is sometimes a multi-purpose network server, a dedicated network server, or a dedicated device. All dedicated time servers do not provide accurate time.
Existing network servers (eg file servers) can be time servers with additional software. Homepage NTP provides a free and widely used reference implementation from NTP servers and clients to many popular operating systems. Another option is a dedicated time server device.
The term "stratum" is used to label proximity to a central or high quality time server. Stratum shows where a certain time server is in the server hierarchy. The scale is 1 to 15 where 1 is the most accurate and probably very special physical device. Several times the client will reject the time update from the strata server is too high, and most will prefer a low strata time source to a higher one. This can be a trap for administrators who manage internal time servers without the correct time source.
