The game lasted several centuries before the original Star Ocean , and revolved around Edge and his crew fighting a mysterious threat called "Grigori".

Gameplay
The Last Hope uses the same time battle system as the previous games in the series, new features including the new Rush Gauge and Blindsides. Gauge Rush allows players to perform preemptive attacks on their opponents or use special abilities or attacks. Each character will own and use their own Rush gauge. Blindsides allows players to attack behind enemies who target players by slipping behind the enemy quickly from his line of sight and launching a preliminary assault on the enemy from his back. One of the most important changes in the system is the number of characters that can be controlled and fought in the battle back to four, as in the first two Star Ocean games (limited to only three in the previous title, Star Ocean Until End of Time).
A new feature in The Last Hope allows players to take on the role of the captain of the spacecraft, SRF-003 Calnus, who has been sent to search for a new limit by USTA. Calnus has a flight deck where players can choose which planet he wants to fly, a recreation room where his teammates can gather and interact with each other as well as a conference room where players gather with crews to come up with new ideas for Item Creation. The battle arena contains battle simulators, features from previous games such as Star Ocean: Until End of Time , which allows players and their comrades to practice combat. The crew crew allows players to choose a character that shares the same room, and the right pair can cause a special action between characters known as Private Actions.
The Personal Action System (often abbreviated to PA) is a feature that returns from previous games in the Star Ocean series, where the main protagonist, Edge, can interact with his teammates. PA consists of acts such as talking to them during a break after exploration or battle, a player can form a relationship with him, which enhances the affection of members or respects the main character. Choosing the right choice during an action will open a special event or cutscenes between Edge and team members. Placing characters in the same room also builds relationships and opens more PA events. If a member is seriously injured in combat, a special "Rage" mode can be opened that allows close members to attack enemies with more power. PA can also change the end of the game with the different cutscenes being displayed, there are a total of about 100 PAs that can be opened in the game.
The game has a game mechanics called "Attack Type Battle of the Battle" (BEAT), a system that allows players to choose the type of fighting style that the team likes, such as offense, defense, and sneak attack. As the battle experience increases, the team can achieve a higher combat rank status, which unlocks an advanced style, known as Improved Actions.

Story
Settings
The Last Hope is a prequel of the original Star Ocean and takes place on Earth on S.D. 0010 (A.D 2096), where the world is on the verge of collapse. At A.D. 2064, World War III broke out after several clashes between the World Federation of Republicans, the ruling governmental bodies on Earth, and its enemies around the world. Weapons of Mass Destruction are exploited by both war factions without hesitation, leveling the ground on Earth. The declining situation leads people to believe that the end of the world is imminent, but the critical situation forces both factions to announce a ceasefire. After the war ended, most of Earth's population had been killed and the natural environment deteriorated at an alarming rate.
The living population of humankind is forced to live in the confines of underground cities and united states to form a government body known as the United Nations in 2065. Universal Science and Technology or USTA was established by the Greater United Nations, its mission is to find a new home planet for mankind in far-reaching outer space. In S.D. 0001 (A.D. 2087), the first year of the newly formed Spacedate calendar, Professor Trillas Bachtein succeeded in experimenting on his path in a space that is a breakthrough in space travel. That same year, USTA secretly mobilized the Space Reconnaissance Force or SRF project which would then be in S.D. 0010 sent the first human expedition into space to find a suitable planet for the relocation of mankind.
Synopsis
Edge Maverick is a member of Space Reconnaissance Force (SRF). Together with childhood friend Reimi Saionji, he embarked on the first interstellar journey undertaken by mankind to discover another world of friendliness and possibly another home for mankind. Edge's best friend, Crowe Almedio, is Captain at SRF and also assigned on missions. Departing Lunar, Reimi and Ujung bases were assigned as crew members on the "Calnus" board, while Crowe was commanded "Aquila". Shortly after the launch, ships shifted to hyperspace. However, there was a meteor shower in the middle of the road and all the ships, except Aquila, land-fell on planet Aeos. Captain Calnus, Grafton, gave Edge and Reimi the task of exploring the planet and searching for other ships. While searching, they found the fallen SRF ship and a dying crew member. He warned the two about the meteor fragments his team collected, saying that he had to kill his team because of it. Shortly after, a big monster materialized. With the help of an unknown man, they defeated the creature. The man introduced himself as Faize Sheifa Beleth, an Elder and an Earth ally. The trio returned to Calnus, where a large base was built by the Eldarians. It was revealed that Eldarians and Earth have been allies for several years, and the Elders really gave Earth the technology of interstellar travel. With much to clean, Captain Grafton gave his ship command to the Edge, with Reimi and Faize accompanying him. With an improved Calnus, the trio heads out.
With the help of SRF operator Welch Vineyard, the trio went on an exploratory mission. They go to the Lemuris planet and start exploring. The group meets Lymle Lemuri Phi, a little girl and grandson of the village elder, Ghimdo, who suffers from a disease that gradually turns him to stone. The group eventually found the fallen alien ship and also found the source of the disease. The alien ship was lowered into a Cardianon ship, which uses the population to experiment. Lymle joined the group and they headed to Cardinalon's parent, because Cardianon did not have a homeworld. On its parent, they find more experiments that turn the Cardianon into a monster, using a strange energy rock they call "Epiphanies of Guidance". Finally met with Morphua cyborg Bacchus D-79, the group escaped from the ship as it began to hyperjump to an unknown portion of the galaxy. The group agrees that they should return to the homebase and inform the experiments of Eldarians, Morphus, and Earth of the Cardianons. When trying to hyperjump, the group gets stuck in a weird whirl and land on an unknown planet.
After some initial explorations, the group determined that they somehow landed on Earth in 1957. Not knowing how they traveled through time, they determined the best course of action was to go. But they are late, because the government has captured Calnus and Reimi. Met with a scientist named Klaus Bachtein, the group was told they were in New Mexico. They were also told that Klaus had worked for the government, at a base dedicated to investigating extraterrestrials. The group devised a plan, using the cloaking ability of Bacchus, Klaus would pretend to "capture" extraterrestrials. Once inside the facility, the group met Meracle Chamlotte, a cat-like human who had been imprisoned for several years. Meracle joins the group, who promises to help him escape. After running to Commander Milla, revealed to be Klaus's wife, Edge was given a choice. He can fight out, kill some people, or let them use his superior ship technology to help the Earth make progress. Edge agrees, only to be doubled by Milla, who uses Calnus power sources to turn on his experimental device. Disheartened, Edge and companies imprisoned in Reimi cells. Klaus succeeds in destroying it, and the group manages to escape because it destroys the whole Earth in a big explosion, driving Calnus back to their time period.
Bacchus concluded that, since Edge and Reimi are alive, they are on alternate Earth. Despite this, Edge is desperate for the massive loss of life he made for himself, allowing Milla. Deeming Edge was not worth it, Reimi took command, and the group landed on the planet Roak to explore and collect inventory. Edge continues to have problems with his decision, which precludes group exploration. The group meets a local tribal woman and rescues Featherfolk named Sarah Jerand from the kidnappers. The team found that a mysterious cult had kidnapped people and was asked to consult local seer Eleyna Farrence. Sarah was kidnapped by another cult. The group meets Myuria Tionysus, another Morphus who believes Crowe has killed her husband, Lucien. He forced himself into the group. Eleyna told the group that the cult met in a tower called "The Purgatoriam", and also helped the Edge move from Earth's tragedy. Entering the tower, the group fights down and meets the leader of the Tamiel sect. The group defeated him, and Edge saved Sarah. Faize was sad when he discovered that the worshipers had slaughtered the tribe that helped his group before.
Edge has come to terms with the alternative Earth situation, and takes over command once again. Bacchus reveals his mission, to eradicate items known as "The Grigori", objects that force evolution and mutations in animals (revealed that some game bosses have found these items and mutated). Welch contacted the group with information that the Aeos command center had stopped communications and ordered the group to investigate the situation. The group returns to the Aeos Command Center, which has been attacked by mysterious forces and destroyed. Eventually the team ran into ships and troops that appeared to be SRF. However, Myuria explains that they are the enemy known as "Phantom". Finally, the group was rescued by Crowe and an Eldarian, Arumat. Crowe reveals to Myuria that he tried to save Lucien, who was shot down by a Cardianon ship. He also told the group that he had abandoned his mission and sought to destroy "Lost Procedure", the source of Grigori. Arumat goes on to explain how the Eldarian homeworld, Eldar, was attacked and destroyed by ghosts, prompting Faize to join Crowe while Arumat continued alongside Edge. Crowe went into space, where he used a hostile ghost ship in an effort to save and protect Eldarian refugees. Powerless, Faize watched one after the other, the Elder refugee ship being shot down and crushed. Unable to continue watching the scene unfold, Faize enters his Sol to join the battle for Crowe's surprise.
Edge's team destroyed Grigori in Aeos and convinced Arumat to join them. Bacchus told them to go to Morphus homeworld, En II. In En II, the group learns that the Lost Procedure is an entity living in another dimension and that, if left unchecked, will consume their dimensions. At that time, the planet was attacked by Phantom and the group managed to defend the planet. When Calnus turns into a warship, Edge feels anxious for leaving his mission. Though he knew he was fighting for what was right, he felt desperate in seeing Calnus, the once peaceful exploration ship turned into a battleship. The group was told that the Lost Procedure itself is almost impossible to destroy. However, there is a source dubbed "Nox Obscurus" which reinforces the energy damaged by Grigori and returns it to the Lost Procedure, which in turn produces more Grigori. The group formulated a plan to destroy Nox Obscurus, and destroy the entity. The combined strength of the Morphus fleet and the Earth fleet attacked Nox Obscurus, which defended itself, resulting in the destruction of the Lunar Earth base. Crowe reveals himself to life, and sacrifices himself to take Nox Obscurus's external security measures, allowing Calnus's entry. Inside, the group learns that the Cardianon parent composes most of the structure, with many monsters in the created creation. After crossing several layers, the group entered the Palace of Creation and met the Apostle of Creation. The apostle told them that their assimilation was inevitable, and stopped fighting. After his defeat, he was revealed to be Faize, after being given into Procedure and assimilated. Faize assimilated into a dreadful creature and fought once again with the group.
The monster was defeated, and the moon began to crumble. Not wanting to leave Faize behind, Edge tries to save her, but both fall into the dimension portal. Edge wakes up floating in a separate dimension, where Crowe and Faize tell him that they are fine and will always take care of him. Edge is happily reunited with everyone returning to his own dimension on the USTA spacecraft. The Gaghan commander of the Eldarians revealed that Lymle's homeworld, Lemuris, was the planet they had been searching for years and where some of their ancestors migrated into the past. Thus the inhabitants of Lemuris and the Elders share a common ancestor and they plan to colonize and make Lemuris their new home. "Lightspeed" commander Kenny offers Edge and Reimi the opportunity to travel to other planets and spread their technology to create a more peaceful universe. Edge gave an eager speech about how their actions are exactly the same as Lost Procedures and how to deliver sophisticated technology to a civilization that is not ready for it will only spell disaster. Representatives of Morphism recognize that Edge is right about his argument and Morphus will continue to monitor the Lost Procedure without disturbing other life forms in the galaxy. The Elders also agreed and decided that once in Lemuris, they would strip themselves of their advanced technology and start a new life. People are left with what they know about Eldarian technology and left alone to advance at their own natural pace.
Edge crew broke up and every member returned home and their families. Faize manages to return from another dimension and finds Lymle talking to the remains of his grandfather's stone. Myuria went on to find her own happiness and Bacchus underwent a procedure to become flesh and blood again to be with his wife. Arumat became a traveler through space, protecting the people he met. Meracle back to life with Eleyna and Sarah finally can fly. Crowe washes up on the edge of Roak and implied to marry Eleyna shortly thereafter. Edge and Reimi, once again only two passengers over Calnus mach II, set out with the hope of one day meeting their old colleagues and with the excitement of exploring the great Star Ocean.
Development
Star Ocean: The Last Hope was originally announced at the 2007 Square Enix Party "Star Ocean Special Stage" as temporarily titled Star Ocean 4 without platform. An Xbox 360 release was revealed during the 2008 RPG Premium RPG 2008. In a special interview with Xbox Japan, a few weeks before the game's release, game producer Yoshinori Yamagishi revealed that the team began planning Star Ocean: The Last Hope as soon as they finished developing Star Ocean: Until End of Time , so the actual development time takes about 5 years. This game uses an improved version of the gaming machine used in Infinite Undiscovery . He also mentioned that the biggest problem facing the team when making the game is capacity, because making RPGs in the seventh generation console requires a large amount of data and coding thanks to the complexity of graphics and animation. The game also runs at 60 frames constant per second. The pre-rendered films were performed with a collaboration between tri-Ace and Visual Works, while character design and illustrations (only in Japanese version) were handled by Katsumi Enami, best known for his illustrations in light novels and anime series Baccano! .
When asked if the title will be released on PlayStation 3, Square Enix producer Yoshinori Yamagishi replied "We can say that it will be released first [on Xbox 360].Whether we will release it on the PS3 has not yet been decided we may release it, we may not. Square Enix and The Last Hope ' s development team later stated that there was no plan for the PS3 version. In an interview, Yamagishi said that the Xbox 360 is the first seventh-generation console to come out, and "the hardware is made very well", from the developer's point of view, as the reason why he chose it to develop Star Ocean: The Last Hope on. In a test session held for Microsoft Japanese employees and some prominent bloggers, when asked if Star Ocean: The Last Hope follows after Star Ocean: Until End of Time plays the flow , Yamagishi states in Q & amp; A that the SO4 world exists in a parallel universe of the one in the first three Star Ocean games. When asked if Tri-Ace will recreate the first three games on a new generation console, Yamagishi states that he prefers to work on a new sequel for Star Ocean instead of developing a remake, because development time for them will be very consuming. Since then Yoshinori Yamagishi stated that he finished with Star Ocean after achieving everything he did with this series.
On September 14, 2009 Star Ocean: The Last Hope International was announced in Japanese game magazine Famitsu for PlayStation 3. Released in February 2010 on a Blu-ray Disc, it contains additional content not found in Xbox 360 versions, such as double voice (Japanese and English), portrait of original drawing characters for dialogs, and some new soundtracks.
On October 11, 2017, Square Enix announced a remastered version of the game for PlayStation 4 and PC with 4K (PS4 Pro) support. The album was released worldwide on November 28, 2017 as a digital download only.
Music
Music for Star Ocean: The Last Hope was composed by Motoi Sakuraba, who has worked on soundtracks for previous Star Ocean games and many other games developed by tri-Ace. Soundtrack will be released in two parts:
Reception
Famitsu won a total of 34/40 matches, comprising a score of 9/9/8/8.
Overall, this game is much better received than other Square Enix next-gen console RPG games such as Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant, both of which have mixed reviews from critics. IGN won the game score of 8.0. In its review, IGN states that although the storyline in the story line can be said in a much more interesting way, the latest RPG Ace and Square Enix stay together pretty well with the action-packed game. One minor annoyance encountered during the game is disk-swapping, which requires players to switch discs if they need to travel between planets later in the game. The review also feels that the Japanese voice track should be included as an option in the North American version, as the UK's voice and engaging lips are terrible. IGN gives The Last Hope International a 8.5, praises the entry of Japanese voices, and the original anime portrait. X-Play gave The Last Hope 4 out of 5, stating that the story is epic, interesting and slow-paced from beginning to end, and the fight becomes frantic, complex and subtle. X-Play criticizes the game for having poor voice acting, and a goal that is not always clear to lead the player. TeamXbox delivers games with a score of 8.5, praising balanced and addictive battles that allow players to bring strategy and game skills into combat. The Official Xbox Magazine gives a score of 8.5, citing an addictive mix of combat, search and storyline as a plus, but criticizes the long stretch of cutscenes and the lack of rescue points around.
The game sold 166,027 copies in the first four days in the Japanese market place it in third place behind Blue Dragon and Tales of Vesperia for the sale of Xbox 360 games in Japan. 24,584 units of Xbox 360 were also sold during the week of February 16, 2009. The Last Hope has become the best-selling Xbox 360 game in Japan, with 208,438 units. As of May 31, 2009, the game has sold 450,000 copies worldwide.
GameZone Steven Hopper gave 8.5/10, "The Last Hope International", saying "With the inclusion of the Japanese voice track, this is the definitive version of The Last Hope, and a decent purchase for Japanese-RPG fans. changed from the original 360 version and there are some frustrating problems, this is definitely a solid RPG and a good time investment. "
PixlBit gives The Last Hope International a 4/5 states, "If you have a PlayStation 3 and an Xbox 360 and are looking for a definitive version of Star Ocean: The Last Hope, no need to look further.PlayStation3 version does not have swapping disks, while the Xbox 360 version includes 3 discs, as well as features of Japanese voice-overs.Finally, this game has a variety of other small enhancements that enhance the overall experience in the PlayStation 3. "
1UP gives The Last Hope the value of the letter B- and The Last Hope International the value of the letter B which states about The Last Hope International : "The PS3 version of Star Ocean 4, while out a year after its 360 partner, at least brings some very desirable extras. For one, you can listen to all the game dialogues in Japanese - a feature that should include more games (It even makes me want to play through the game without being voiced is really dead!) And you can swap the game menu to a more inspired look by anime. If, like me, you think the 3D 360 character portrait looks out of place, it's nice to switch to authentic Japanese art. "
