The Atomic Energy Commission is the governing body of the Atomic Energy Department (DAE), Government of India. DAE is under the direct cost of the Prime Minister.

The Indian Atomic Energy Commission was formed on August 3, 1948 under the late Department of Scientific Research. A resolution passed by the Government of India subsequently replaced the commission with the "Atomic Energy Commission of India" on 1 March 1958 under the Department of Atomic Energy with greater financial and executive power.

The functions of the Atomic Energy Commission are: (i) conducting research in atomic science in the country; (ii) to train, atomic scientists in the country; (iii) to promote nuclear research in the laboratory of the commission itself or in India; (iv) to search for atomic minerals in India and extract them for use on an industrial scale.

It has five research centers ie.

  • Atom Bhabha Research Center (BARC), Mumbai
  • Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu)
  • King Ramanna Advanced Technology Center (RRCAT), Indore
  • Cyclotron Energy Variable Center (VECC), Kolkata
  • Directorate of Atomic Mineral for Exploration and Research (AMD), Hyderabad.

It also provides financial assistance to autonomous national institutions conducting field research and has various other organizations under it.
