Atom is free and open source source text and source code editor for macOS, Linux, and Microsoft Windows with support for plug-ins written in Node.js, and embedded Git Control, developed by GitHub. Atom is a desktop application built using web technology. Most expanded packages have free software licenses and are built and maintained by the community. Atom is based on Electron (formerly known as Atom Shell), a framework that allows cross-platform desktop applications using Chromium and Node.js. It's written in CoffeeScript and Less. It can also be used as an integrated development environment (IDE). Atom was released from beta version, like version 1.0, on June 25, 2015. The developer called it "a hackable text editor for the 21st century".

Privacy
Initially there were concerns and discussions about two opt-out packets that reported various data to an external server. However, the packages now participate with the verbose dialog at the initial launch:
- Metric package: Reports usage information to Google Analytics, including a unique UUID v4 random identifier. According to the author, this is to determine the performance and know the most frequently used functions. This feature can be disabled by the user by going to Settings View, searching for metric packages, and disabling them.
- Exception reporting package: Report an Atom exception that is not caught on bugsnag.com.
