Atom is a system on a chip platform (SoC) designed for smartphones and tablet computers, launched by Intel in 2012. This is a continuation of the partnerships announced by Intel and Google on September 13, 2011 to provide support for Android operating system on Intel x86 processor. This range competes with existing SoCs developed for smartphone and tablet markets from companies like Texas Instruments, Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Samsung. Unlike these companies, which use ARM-based CPUs designed from scratch to consume very low power, Intel has adapted the x86-based Intel Atom CPU developed for low power usage in netbooks, even for lower power usage.

Since April 2012, some manufacturers have released tablets and phones based on Intel Atom as well as using SoCs as the basis for other small form factor devices (eg mini PC and PC stick).

In April 2016, Intel announced a major restructuring, including the cancellation of the SoFIA platform. Reported by many news channels that Broxton was canceled.

Operating system support on Cloverview

While Penwell SoC supports, in addition to Microsoft Windows, both Linux and Android operating systems, Intel has announced that it will not provide support for Linux on the Cloverview family of the Atom-on-a-chip system. This announcement has caused a strong negative reaction from open source supporters. A few days later Intel issued a statement saying that it had "plans for another version of this platform aimed at Linux/Android". The initial Clover Trail platform only supports Microsoft Windows (z27x0 series). The Clover Trail platform was later released by targeting Google Android (z25x0 series).

The latest version of Windows 10 to support Cloverview is the Birthday Edition (1607 version); newer versions can not be installed.

New power status in Cloverview

Z2760 Cloverview has introduced two new power states: S0i1 and S0i3. Country S0i1 is intended to be used when the screen is on but the inactive user interacts with the device; it consumes power in the range of mW, and can be inserted/left in microseconds. State S0i3 is intended to be used when the device screen is off; it consumes power in the microwatt range, and can be inserted/left in milliseconds. As a result, Intel claims battery life for longer (up to three weeks for regular tablets).

Roadmap

In May 2011, Intel announced an accelerated roadmap for Atom SoC. The Silvermont 22Ã,nm microarchitecture is scheduled for release in 2013, and the release of 14nm Airmont microarchitecture is scheduled for 2014.

It has been reported that Silvermont-based SoCs will be codenamed Tangier (smartphone Merrifield), Valleyview (Bay Trail tablets), will be available in single, dual, and quad-core versions, and Valleyview will include the 7th generation GPU Intel, -7ÃÆ'â € "more than the existing Atomic GPU.

Other upcoming Silvermont-based SoCs atoms include Rangeley and Avoton (part of the Edisonville platform).

The airmont-based Atom platform will be codenamed Moorefield (smartphone) and Cherry Trail (tablet) using Anniedale and Cherryview SoCs.

The Goldmont-based Atom Platform is codenamed Morganfield (smartphone) and Willow Trail (tablet) using Broxton SoC. The Willow Trail SoC platform was canceled in April 2016, as Broxton is limited to IoT devices.
