Wagrain (Austro-Bavarian: WÃÆ' à ¥ groÃÆ'à £ ) is a market town in St. District. Johann im Pongau in the state of Salzburg, Austria. It is located in a tall valley that runs from Salzach in Sankt Johann on the west to the Enns river in the east. The municipalities include Katastralgemeinden Hof, Hofmarkt, Schwaighof and Vorderkleinarl . Its population is around 3,020.
The completion of Wakrein at the Archbishopric of Salzburg was first mentioned in the 1243 deed. The original mining area, Wagrain in the early 18th century was the center of Crypto-Protestantism in the Catholic country. Around 1732/33 the Count-Archbishop of Count Leopold Anton von Firmian had expelled the Protestant population; largely accepted by King Frederick William I of Prussia and resettling the province of East Prussia, which had been destroyed by the plague.
Currently, Wagrain relies mainly on tourism. Located in the valley of Ski resort Amadà ©, one of the largest ski resort networks in Europe. In summer, ski lifts cyclists into the mountains for the summer biking season in the summer.
Wagrain is the original home of Atomic Skis, founded in 1955 by Alois Rohrmoser, who purchased a wheelwright shop, and expanded its production to include winter sports equipment, such as skis and sleds, using local timber resources and crew of four craftsmen.
