The vomer ( ) is one of the unpaired skull face bones. It is located in the midline, and articulated with sphenoid, ethmoid, left and right palate bone, and left and right maxillary bone. Vomer forms the inferior portion of the nasal septum, with the superior part formed by a perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone. The name is derived from the Latin word for a connector and bone form.

Structure

Vomer is located in the median plane, but the anterior part is often bent to one side.

The shape is thin, rectangular, and forms a barrier and the bottom of the nasal septum; It has two surfaces and four borders.

Its surface is characterized by small wrinkles for blood vessels, and in each is the nasopalatine groove, which runs downward and forward, and places the nerve and nasopalatine vessels.

Border

The superior border , the thickest one, presents a deep groove, bordered on both sides by expansion of horizontal bone projecting - is called the wing of vomer ; The coil receives rostrum from the sphenoid, while the alae margin articulates with the vaginal process of the medial sphenoid pterygoid plate in the back, and by the sphenoidal process of the palate bone in front.

The inferior border is articulated with a symbol formed by maxillÃÆ'Â| and palatine bones.

The anterior border is the longest and the slopes down and forward. The top half integrates with a perpendicular plate of etmoid; the underside is grooved to the inferior margin of the nasal septum cartilage.

The posterior boundary is free of bone articulation, has no muscle attachment. It is sunken, separates choanae, and thick and bifid on top, thin underneath.

Articulation

Vomer articulates with six bones:

  • two skulls, sphenoid and ethmoid.
  • four faces, two upper jaws; and two bone palatine.

It also articulates with cartilage of the nasal septum.

Function

The vomeronasal organ, also called the Jacobson organ, is a chemoreceptor organ named for its proximity to the vomer and nasal bone, and is primarily developed in animals such as cats (which adopt a peculiar pose called the Flehmen or flehming when exploiting it), and is considered to have something to do with the perception of certain pheromones.

In other animals

In bony fish, vomanya flattened, paired, bone forming the front of the roof of the mouth, just behind the premaxile bone. In many species, they have teeth, equip them in the right jaws; in some laby prints, the teeth on vom are actually larger than the main set. In amphibians and reptiles, the vomit becomes narrower, due to the presence of enlarged choanae (the inside of the nostrils) on both sides, and they can extend further in the jaw. They are usually small in birds, where they form the back part of the back beaks, again in between the choanae.

In mammals, the vomit becomes narrower, and fused into a vertically oriented single bone. The development of the hard palate below the vomer means that the bone is now located in the nasal space, separate from the mouth.
