After 30 years of heavy smoking, Carr quit in 1983, at the age of 48. He then left his job as an accountant in the same year and opened the first "easiest" clinic, to help other junkies. Carr wrote a number of books intended to lead to smoking cessation and excessive weight loss, some of which were bestsellers.

Carr writes that smoking addiction is psychological and therefore this is the most significant factor in cigarette addiction. The book itself is divided into 44 chapters, whose purpose is to guide smokers, after reading the book, make the decision to quit smoking.
Evaluation and effectiveness limits
For some doctors and researchers, the efficacy of this method is controversial, despite intense commercial advertising. Indeed, according to the NICE document (taken from its updated web page of 15 May 2015), the NHS discontinued the smoking service (NHS SSS) ordered NICE (national agency for clinical excellence) to review the evidence for the effectiveness of SSS SSS care. The Easyway program of Allen Carr is methodically evaluated among other methods such as acupuncture or rapid smoking. The report concludes no controlled study of the efficacy of Easyway's Allen Carr program.
A pneumologist and tobacco addiction expert (Pr Bertrand Dautzenberg) assumes that Allen Carr's Easyway deals with incantations rather than evidence-based techniques. Pr. Dautzenberg stated that the training method is acceptable but raises concerns that Allen Carr states that nicotine's physical dependence is unimportant and is frontally opposed to substitution treatments. Finally, according to him, doctors should advise against the Easyway Allen Carr method.
