A sonographer , or ultrasonographer , is a healthcare professional, specializing in the use of ultrasonic imaging devices to generate diagnostic images, scans, videos, or anatomical 3D volumes and diagnostics of data, often a radiographer but perhaps any health care professional with appropriate training. The requirements for clinical practice vary greatly in each country. Sonography requires special education and skills to view, analyze and modify scans to optimize the information in images. Due to the high level of latitude disconnect and diagnostic input, the sonographer has a high degree of responsibility in the diagnostic process. Many countries require that medical sonographers have professional certification. Sonographers must understand ultrasound physics, cross-sectional anatomy, physiology and pathology.

Australia
The Australasian Sonographers Association (ASA) was formed in 1992 in response to the desire of sonographers throughout Australia for an organization that represents and considers important issues for sonographers in the Australian healthcare environment. ASA now has over 4000 individual member sonographers, and about 40 company members. ASA has promised to pursue high standards in the practice of Medical Sonography. The ASA has a board structure and several representative branches in all Australian states.
Australian Sonographers must be accredited by the Australographer Accreditation Accountant Sonographers (ASAR). ASAR's brief is to accredit and re-accredit regularly, post-graduate ultrasound courses offered by the University of Australia (and DMU), and to establish criteria for other Australian and New Zealand programs and programs that will be judged. In addition, the list of accredited sonographers (AMSs) and students (ASS) is maintained and their ongoing professional development activities (CPDs) are monitored and recorded.
Commissison Health Insurance in collaboration with the Accreditation Accountant Australografer Sonographers (ASAR) introduced in 2002 an ongoing professional accreditation and education program for sonografer. ASAR recognizes registration with the Australian Orthoptic Board as an appropriate accreditation for orthoptics to do sonography in relation to ocular structures.
Canada
Most Canadian sonographers have received their education through an accredited sonography program. There are many programs available throughout the country and may include a direct entry program for a degree, advanced diploma and a second graduate discipline certificate program. Canadian Sonography enrolls sonographers in three credentials: Generalist, Heart, and Vascular. To become enrolled, eligible candidates must successfully meet the Canadian Clinical Skills Assessment (CCSA) clinics and academic requirements. Sonographi Canada The recognized sonographer should also document their continuing education by maintaining a minimum of 40 sustainable professional development (CPD) credits every three years.

The Nova Scotia Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (NSSDMS) is currently working with the Nova Scotia Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (NSAMRT) to add diagnostic ultrasound as a new discipline on the proposed campus. This means the diagnostic sonography will be a self-regulated profession in Nova Scotia, along with radiography, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging and radiation therapy. The Ministry of Health now considers its application; appropriate action and related regulations have been developed, and the associations aim to gain approval at the spring session of 2012 in the legislature.
United Kingdom
In England sonographers are also responsible for image interpretation and issuing diagnostic reports. Sonographers in the UK are trained to a high level, the training itself is delivered as an MSc/PGDip/PGCert by the university and supervised by the Consortium for Sonography Education Accreditation (CASE), since the training is delivered at the postgraduate level all sonographers must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent prior to specialization this means training can take at least 4 years. There is currently no requirement for sonographer to be registered in the UK, although the majority are enrolled in the Board of Health and Nursing Professionals (HCPC) as radiographers. The state registration of sonographers in their own right is being sought by the profession. However HCPC has previously attempted to require mandatory sonographers registration, a movement supported by a number of professional bodies and HCPC rejected by the Ministry of Health. The reason for this refusal is still controversial but the current voluntary register is managed by the College of Radiographers.
In the UK, sonographers are employed by hospitals in the National Health Service and by private companies that offer health services.
United States
This profession is divided into specialties such as heart, uterus, vascular, and general sonographer. Common Sonographers are listed in abdominal and/or obstetric and gynecological sonography.
It takes about 1 1/2 years to get a degree in diagnostic medical sonography. In the United States the most widely received sonography education is provided by CAAHEP/JRC-DMS accredited programs. There are two credentialing agencies in the United States for sonographers, Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) Established in 1968 and American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) Established in 1975. Both CCI and ARDMS have earned the prestigious ANSI-ISO 17024 accreditation. for the certification body of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Accreditation is provided through the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The recognition of the ARDMS program in providing credentials has also earned ARDMS accreditation with the National Commission for Certification Bodies (NCCA). NCCA is an accreditation of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA). Founded in 1977 as a nonprofit organization, NOCA is a leader in setting quality standards for certification organizations.
In 2009, New Mexico and Oregon became the first two states to require sonographers license.
Sonografer on a real note earned $ 250,000 in bad years, but a good year $ 450,000. During their career, 84% of the sonographers reported experiencing some form of work-related musculoskeletal pain due to scanning in the disturbed position, the grip of the wrong transducer, spending too much time manipulating the transducer on a technically difficult test such as a fat or bulky pregnant patient. and lack of upper body fitness.
