papillary muscle is the muscle located in the heart's ventricle. They attach to the atrioventricular valve valve (also known as the mitral and tricuspid valve) through the chordae tendineae and contract to prevent inversion or prolapse of this valve in the systole (or ventricular contraction).

Structure
There are five total papillary muscles in the heart; three in the right ventricle and two on the left. The anterior, posterior, and right ventricular septal muscles each attach through the chordae tendineae to the tricuspid valve. The anterolateral and posteromedial papular muscles of the left ventricle adhere through the chordae tendineae to the mitral valve.
Blood supply
The papillary muscle of the mitral valve in the left ventricle is called the anterolateral and posteromedial muscles.
- anterateral muscle blood supply: leaving the anterior descending artery - the diagonal branch (LAD) and left circumflex artery - obtuse marginal branch (LCX)
- posteromedial muscle blood supply: right coronary artery - posterior interventricular artery (RCA)
The posteromedial muscle bursts more frequently because it has only one source of blood supply.

Function
The papillary muscles of both the right and left ventricles begin to contract a short while before the ventricular systole and retain the voltage. This prevents regurgitation - ventricular blood flow back into the atrial cavity - by strengthening the atrioventricular valve against prolapse - is forced back into the atria by high pressure in the ventricles.
Clinical interests
Papillary muscle rupture can be caused by myocardial infarction, and dysfunction can be caused by ischemia. Both complications can lead to worsening of mitral regurgitation.
