Plot

This season follows the story of surgical internships, occupants and competent mentors, as they have difficulty with their chosen competitive careers. It's set in the Seattle Hospital's fictional Grace-Mercy West surgical wing, located in Seattle, Washington. The main theme of this season is the character that is adapting to change, as all the fifth-year surgical residents have turned into surgical participants, and are now teaching internships, and operate on their own operations. This season's early episodes portray characters that deal with the aftermath of an eight-seater plane crash that claimed the lives of Lexie Gray (Chyler Leigh) and after rescuing Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), who died in the first episode.

Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) finds his surgical career in doubt after damaging his hands, but eventually his sister Liz (Neve Campbell) donates nerves from his legs and Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) is able to save his hands. Later, Shepherd receives more good news when his wife Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo) discovers that she is pregnant, even though she was previously told that it is unlikely she could get pregnant. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) was very traumatized when she was rescued and suffered a brief reactive psychosis and finally decided to take her alliance in Minnesota, despite growing up unhappy in her new neighborhood and returning to Seattle after the death of her friend and mentor, Doctor Thomas. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) survived the plane crash even though her leg was injured, but after her wound became infected and her legs had to be amputated to save her life. Robbins reacts badly to this, bitterly and blames his wife Callie and former friend Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and refuses to leave his bed or get back to work.

Derek discovers that prior to the plane crash, the hospital recently transformed the airline into one with a worse safety record for budget reasons, resulting in four survivors (Gray, Shepherd, Robbins and Yang) deciding to file a lawsuit, and it soon became clear that Owen Hunt's (Kevin McKidd) head of operations had given the green light to change. To prevent the court case the doctor was not disposed of, Hunt decided to divorce Yang, but the two secretly resumed their relationship and agreed to start again. Though contemplating the settlement, the doctors decided to proceed with the lawsuit and were eventually awarded each fifteen million dollars, but the insurance company found an unexpected gap and refused to pay, so the hospital itself became responsible, putting its future in extreme doubt. Dr Alana Cahill (Constance Zimmer) was appointed to cut costs at the hospital and he finally decided the best course of action was to find new buyers and attract the company called Pegasus. Later, Torres and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) found unpleasant consequences that would befall the hospital if they were taken over by Pegasus who encouraged four survivors of the accident (and Torres on behalf of Sloan) to raise their money together in an offer to buy the hospital itself and quit their job, so Pegasus withdrew. The doctors had difficulty when they failed to secure an additional benefactor, but at the last minute Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen) revealed that the Harper Avery Foundation was willing to give a majority stake in the company, provided that they had at least one member on the board. The doctors agreed and their purchase was completed, only for Catherine to appoint her son Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) to part of the council, effectively placing him in charge of the entire hospital.

In another storyline, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) marries his partner Ben Warren (Jason George), despite suffering last-minute breaks and losing the original wedding ceremony because Adele Webber (Loretta Devine) is hospitalized. Adele later died after the surgery, leaving her husband, Richard suffering a sense of guilt for her relationship with Catherine Avery. A new apprentice group arrived at Seattle Grace and soon Karev made a close friendship with Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) but the couple failed to develop romance, although other characters commented on their chemistry. After failing board exams in season eight, April Kepner (Sarah Drew) returns to Ohio, but is then taken back by Hunt and resumes his work at the hospital. Upon his return, Kepner restarts his sexual relationship with Jackson, despite being filled with conflicts over his religious beliefs. The couple eventually split up when Kepner refused to make a commitment, and Avery began dating Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) internship, while Kepner began dating a paramedic named Matthew (Justin Bruening).
