Histori
Atom is an attempt to create a low-powered version of J-2. An Arrow is modified with a 65-hp Continental C-65-12 engine and specified J/3 Atom . Only prototypes, registered G-AHSY , (c/n 2250) were built because the aircraft was not developed further. Another example G-AJIJ (c/n 2401) is not finished yet.
The only J/3 was dismantled at Rearsby in 1950 and rebuilt to J/4 standard with new registration G-AJYX and c/n 2941. It crashed near Melton Mowbray on April 22, 1951 after take off without a pilot from Rearsby. The Continental C-65 engine has been replaced by 95 hp Blackburn Cirrus Minor II. This aircraft has since been delegated by CAA.
