Plot
In November 1989, just days before the fall of the Berlin Wall, MI6 agent James Gascoigne was shot and killed by KGB agent Yuri Bakhtin, who stole the List, microfilm documents hidden in Gascoigne watches containing the names of every intelligence agent (on both sides ) is active in Berlin. Ten days later, Lorraine Broughton, top MI6 spy, was brought in for questioning by MI6 executive Eric Gray and CIA agent Emmett Kurzfeld about his recently completed mission to Berlin. The plot jumps between the debrief room and flashbacks to Lorraine's time in Berlin.
The day after Gascoigne's death, Lorraine was sent to recover the List and was told to keep an eye on Satchel, the double agent for KGB that has been a problem for MI6 for years. Upon arriving in Berlin, he was immediately ambushed by a KGB agent who delivered a message from their boss, Aleksander Bremovych, but he was able to escape and meet with his mischievous contact, MI6 Station Chief David Percival. Lorraine looked for Gascoigne's apartment and found a picture of himself and Percival. In debriefing, he told Gray and Kurzfeld that Percival had previously denied knowing Gascoigne and that he suspected Percival was behind the West Berlin police ambushing him when he searched for Gascoigne's apartment. When Lorraine visited a restaurant mentioned by a KGB agent, he met with Bremovych, but was "rescued" by Delphine Lasalle, a rookie French agent. Although Lorraine was initially suspicious of Lasalle, they ended up entering into a romantic relationship.
Percival, has a tailed Lorraine, watching the watchmaker he is visiting. He saw Bakhtin entering the same store. Bakhtin told the watchmaker he has a secret full hour that he will sell to the highest bidder. Kurzfeld met with Lorraine in Berlin, handing over a newspaper containing a number which, when summoned, informed her that the Center was compromised. Percival lured Bahktin into the alley, killed him and took his watch, from where he found out who Satchel was. Lorraine, who does not know Percival has a List, finds that the Stasi officer with the code name Spyglass, who gives the List to Gascoigne, also memorizes the names in it. Lorraine and Percival made plans to escort him across the border into West Berlin. Percival met Bremovych, who suspects Percival has a List, but Percival offers only the second best: Satchel's identity and operation "to keep the balance", also informs him of plans to release Spyglass from East Berlin. Lasalle silently photographed the meeting.
During Spyglass's dismissal, Percival secretly shot him when the KGB was unable to do so. Lorraine fought with several KGBs while rescuing the wounded Spyglass, but he drowned when their car hit the river. Lorraine made it to West Berlin and realized Percival had planted a bug in his mantle. He says Lasalle, who calls Percival and threatens him with his knowledge of his Bremovych meeting. Percival went to Lasalle's apartment and killed him, escaping when Lorraine arrived moments later. Lorraine found the photographs taken by Lasalle and realized Percival had read the List. Percival burned his hiding house and tried to escape, but Lorraine arrived, killed him, and retrieved the List.
In probing MI6, Lorraine knows Percival has told Gray that he has a List and that he is "very close to Satchel". He presents photos of Lasalle and audio recordings, which paint Percival as Satchel. He denies knowing where he is, letting MI6 have no choice but to close the case.
Three days later in Paris, Lorraine, now speaking Russian, met Bremovych, who called him "Comrade Satchel". Bremovych, having learned from Percival that there were more Satchels than he knew before, ordered his men to kill him. Lorraine killed his men; then, speaking in an American accent, he tells Bremovych that he always gives him bad information to manipulate the KGB. He kills Bremovych and then joins Kurzfeld with the List, revealing what Percival has learned from the List; Lorraine is an American triple agent grown by the CIA into KGB and MI6.

Production
An adaptation of The Coldest City graphic novel was announced in May 2015. Described by Variety as "Passion Project" for Theron, he first discovered the story five years earlier. when its production company, Denver and Delilah Productions, sent an unpublished graphic novel. Theron's interest in the first film John Wick inspired him to make David Leitch, one of the directors, leading the project. Leitch finally left John Wick Chapter 2 to direct the movie. According to Theron, the success of Mad Max: Fury Road helped guide the development of Atomic Blonde . The film features a bisexual subplot that is not in the original book. It comes from author Kurt Johnstad, who advised him after Theron "think about how you make this different from other spy films". Leitch insists that the scenes are not there to be "provocative," but "more about whether you're a spy, you'll do anything to get information" and how the main character "finds intimacy and friendship in small doses".
Casting Theron as the leader was announced in May 2015, while James McAvoy was announced in October. In November, John Goodman is reportedly also in talks to join the film. At first it was expected David Bowie would play a role in the film, although he declined the offer shortly before his death. To prepare for the role, Theron worked with eight personal trainers, who "basically make [him] throw up every day". During the process, Theron broke his teeth from clenching his jaw and had to fix it in surgery. She also bruised the ribs during her training. As Theron's training for the film overlaps with Keanu Reeves's training for John Wick Chapter 2, both of them develop a competitive relationship, which includes joint disputes.
The subject of photography on the film begins on November 22, 2015, in Budapest, and then moved to Berlin.
Soundtrack
From the beginning, Leitch felt that using the right track for the project was very important. Part of this tries to answer the question "How did you rediscover this stuffy Cold War spy movie?" Soundtrack uses a combination of 1980s songs and covers. The latter is used to add "contemporary feelings from the 80s". The filmmakers initially worried that they would not be able to get the rights to all the songs that Leitch wanted to use, but Leitch himself estimated that about 75% of his choices made it into the final product. Although the Berlin Wall collapsed in 1989, the concentration of iconic songs came from the first half of the 1980s, with the exception of the chart-top-top figure of George Michael 1988 Father Figure , which was second choice of Leitch after 1986 release Take My Breath Away by Berlin.
Other songs featured in the movie, but not included in the soundtrack:
- New Order - "Blue Monday '88"
- The Public Enemy - "Power Contest"
- Depeche Mode - "Rear Wheel"
- Ausschlag - "Kack Zukunft"
- Michael Pernell - "Along the Way"
- Vladimir Vysotsky - "Mighty Horses"
- Queen and David Bowie - "Under Pressure"
